New Leadership in Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals

On January 5, 2016, Governor John Bel Edwards named  Dr. Rebekah Gee, the state’s former Medicaid Medical Director, as the the new secretary for the Department of Health and Hospitals. In her new position, Dr. Gee brings with her years of experience, education, and training and, as an OB/GYN and the former director of the DHH Birth Outcomes Initiative, a special interest in maternal and child health.

Dr. Gee is the recipient of the Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs 2012 State Leadership in Maternal and Child Health award for her work on improving birth outcomes. In 2014, Dr. Gee received the Woman of the Year award from New Orleans City Business, was recognized as a “40 under 40” leader for New Orleans, a Louisiana “Healthcare Hero”, and received the American Medical Student Association “Women in Leadership” award. Dr. Gee is clinically active and is caring for
patients at LSU. She lives in New Orleans and is the mother of five energetic children.

Dr. Gee has a long history of working with the Bureau of Family Health and our programs. We welcome her leadership and are confident that she will continue to do excellent work for Louisiana families in her new positions.
