Louisiana Lead Poisoning Prevention Program Celebrates National Healthy Homes Month

June is National Healthy Homes Month! The Louisiana Healthy Homes and Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (LHHCLPPP) is working to ensure low-income families have healthy and lead-safe homes. LHHCLPPP does this by:

– Working with physicians, nurses, WIC clinics, and other healthcare service providers to increase blood lead level screening across the state. By law, all children should be screened for elevated lead levels before the age of 6.

– Providing case management services to families of children with elevated blood lead levels

– Educating public health partners on how they can help prevent and address lead poisoning, including staff in Head Start Centers of Louisiana

– Providing lead abatement services to eligible families in 17 targeted parishes. These parishes include:

  • – Beauregard
  • – Caddo
  • – Caldwell
  • – Catahoula
  • – Claiborne
  • – Concordia
  • – De Soto
  • – East Carroll
  • – East Feliciana
  • – Jefferson Davis
  • – Morehouse
  • – Orleans
  • – Plaquemines
  • – St. Mary
  • – Tensas
  • – West Carroll
  • – Winn

What you can do:

– Share the guidance on routine blood lead screening for children with healthcare providers.

– Give parents the Lead Poisoning Risk Checklist to help them assess and reduce their child’s risk of lead exposure and poisoning.

– If you work with families in one of the 17 parishes listed above, share the Lead Abatement Services flyer with them.

– Visit LHHCLPPP’s website for lead poisoning prevention tips.
